Governor Al Aegerter stepped up to the pulpit again and lead us in prayer. Bill Parry kicked the meeting into gear with a pledge to old glory and then the fun began.
Bill Parry started an auction for a participant’s bike which became embedded into a fence during our Sports Fiesta… who was the masked participant?…It was none other than our dear Dan Henrickson and he has the bruises and garfs to prove it. Carla Fargo waved her bidding paddle and bought the lone bike for $25.
Eagle Scout Pete Glorieux came for his check as he has completed his project at St. Paul;s Church emergency locker. But the check was MIA.. as Rob Kracht was resting after a long few weeks of SF ad processing. Pete the check is in the mail.
Now some bragging and announcements:
Soon to be Governor Elect Drummey shared a few highlights from District Convention: Coronado Optimist took 2nd place in the newsletter competition, but no scrapbook competition these days. Although Drummey created a book for Zoll and all must see and sign your good wishes.
Al Aegerter is just about to finish his year as District Governor with many thanks for throughout the district.
Much ado about this past weekend of another successful fun filled and exciting SPORTS FIESTA… and raised $40K for the kids of Coronado.
Ted Krohne got a call from CALTRANS and The Strand along with many other parts of the county are getting a massive clean up done…so head down to NAB this Saturday at 8 am for Highway Clean up….and when you are finished there head over to NAB and help shine up the Vietnam Memorial with Cynthia K.
Mike Lavin thanked Cynthia for a fabulous speaker last week…Nathan Fletcher..if you missed …it was a gem. Bill Carinder wants everyone to know but his wife how happy he is to be married for 33 yrs to his wife!!!! Cheri Aegerter has lived 60 years in Coronado and made the big move to Imperial Beach-Congratulations.
Al Aegerter bragged that Coronado had three of its members on the District Board with soon to be past Governor Al, Governor Elect, Diana and Lt. Governor Jim Zoll.
Guest Tom Catlin came solo as his sponsor Mark B was busy, but Tom dropped off an application. Yeahaa…more members.
No Birthdays, but anniversaries for Chris Cervantes and Sue Cargill. 50/50 went to one of our local golf gurus: Paul Dudley….$28… where will he spend it all?
We had a double treat today of speakers:
Cynthia K. share about her book she published and her adventures after divorce, travel, and numerous job adventures. Thank you Cynthia too who is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her book to Optimist Kids.
Cynthia then introduced Dr. Veltmeyer.
Dr, Veltmeyer who at a young age was abandoned by his father. His mother and siblings were homeless on the streets of South America and at age 11, he and his family came to the US.
Dr. Veltmeyer shared his story of becoming a doctor and with all his pull and knowledge could not get the medical attention for his wife who was diagnosed with breast cancer. His wife survived and has her story to tell but that is what brought him and his wife, Laura to create The Medical Association Membership.
Our health plan is a mess…Dr. Veltmeyer shared the good and the bad, but his solution is health care as it was in the past when a doctor could and would make house calls.
He said Dr’s spend more time rationalizing why they are providing or the need to provide the service to their patient instead of just practicing what they went to school to do: health and help people.
Dr. Veltmeyer,” Healthcare should be providing access to medical coverage.”
The Service for our twentieth President Bill McClure will take place on Sunday, September 24 at 2 PM. The location is the Nautilus Room (our meeting room) and the service will be followed by a reception. Bill’s family wishes that in lieu of flowers donations might be made to the Optimist Club of Coronado to continue their support of the youth of the community.
Thank you to Don for your organization with
